Kitchen Science: Bread Making

bread1

Most of the things we do are open ended, but with cooking it’s science! We take the opportunity to measure and follow instructions. When that’s done we get artsy.

The first time we made bread I measured out the cups of flour before and put them in a bowl which I then gave to lou to scoop into the dough bucket. I did the rest. Each time we made bread I would have Lou do a little more. After I just had Ero I went to put him to bed mid bread making and came back to this:

She was covered in flour. Everything was covered in flour. But the bread got made.

And it was fun for her to do a little of the cleaning.

And by cleaning I mean kinda learning to use the little brush.

Yesterday we formed bread. I layed out the peel and a bowl of flour. She spread out some corn flour on the peel.

Then she dug in.

She formed some kinda spiked creature thing.

They came out great.

The bread recipe is from

The dough rising bucket and flour bucket are from King Arthur Flour.

The pizza stone is some cheap one from Target, but I hear a nice rectangular one is best. And the little cleaning brush is from Ikea.

Edit: Note, we make most of our bread these days the hard way from Cooks Illustrated baking book and rip off some of the dough for the kids to work with.
