Making Dosas

dosa0

My friend Sujani has been teaching me to make dosas.

Little Ero has low iron and is a bit on the skinny size for his age so I’m upping his iron and food. I’m not trying to get him to eat more, I’m just giving him more to eat if he wants it. No airplane spoons trying to squeeze a bit more in. Breast milk is still number one.

Anyways, our doctor said to try to give him yogurt every day, and he loves avacado so that’s another great fat. We are going this week to check his weight again (his low weight may have been because he was squirmy on the scale.) Hopefully all these healthy fats will get him back on his weight arch.

Dosas are an Indian food that’s high in iron and protein with a bit of oil. They are a staple in South Indian food. You mix a cup of lentils with a cup of rice. I used urad dal and brown rice. We soaked them overnight then blended them up with water and had it sit out another 8 hours. Sri (Sujani’s husband) buys a cheep blender every year and every year destroys it and buys another for this they use it so much.

Above Sri’s mom makes a dosa. They spoon it out and swirl it around a crepe pan over high heat. Then they drizzle a teaspoon or more of oil. We use a much smaller pan at home.

They let it get a bit browned and flip it.

Then they serve it with everything. It’s so good. They keep it in the fridge for up to 5 days (2 days for babies/toddlers.)

Ero loves it.

This isn’t a recipe blog, but I thought it might be nice to share something special to us, expecially since all the recipes for dosa online seem a bit more complex than this. But it’s probably going to be the only recipe on Glue Sky! Yum, and thanks Sujani!

I did it! I made a stack tonight and we’ll see how they warm up for breakfast. It took a few attempts to get the pan hot enough, batter spread thin enough, etc, but then I was cranking them out, no problem! Thanks for the detailed instructions! (And the private tutorial helped, too)
By the way, after the first couple failed, the big girl said “I wish Vanessa was here!”

Wow! Excellent. Yesterday while I was trying idly my daughter said “Why do you keep failing?”
