Flour and Water

watermorning

Good morning water.

flour

Good morning flour.

Let’s make a disaster.

starting

I read somewhere that to start your child cooking you can give them some flour and water to mix up. I thought “why would I ever do that, we make our own bread!” Well I tried it anyways.

mix

Lou loved it. We did it two days in a row.

We also incorporated some island/water learning. She wasn’t so into that, but I thought it was cool.

Good times, but wow. Do not let this sit around for a few hours before cleaning. Dough is pretty tough. Not that I cut my knuckle on some dried chunk or anything. Cutting yourself with dough is almost as bad as cutting yourself with tofu. Not that I’ve done that either.

  • Man, be careful with that flour+water combo – that’s how you make homemade glue! 3 cups of flour to 1 cup of water. If you put it down the sink, it can clog the pipes, so be sure to flush it out with lots of water… or even use the toilet. Or even go ahead and put some yeast into it, so you can bake it into bread. It’ll be crappy bread, but at least that won’t clog any pipes.

water + flour = paste (as in paper mache)

We’ve played with this too, especially when the kids want to play with “dough” and I don’t want to/can’t spare any bread dough (or pie crust or whatever) that I’m working with.

We added some food coloring, too, just to see what would happen. Then we wrapped it in plastic and stuck in the frig for a couple of days. It does not improve with time.

Hah, wow. I had no idea. Good thing we used the trash can for most of it.

But with enough time it becomes a science experiment….
