Science/Waldorf Nature Table

Science meets Waldorf! Sci-dorf?

Waldorf families have little nature tables where they set up felt creatures and fabrics for each season. They then place things found in nature on it throughout the season.

After reading this at Parenting Science:

To make science lessons more meaningful, Rochel Gelman and her colleagues recommend that you choose one or two central concepts—like “insides and outsides” or “biological change and life cycles”—and stick with these core concepts for months at a time (Gelman and Brenneman 2004).

I knew this was perfect for our pace of learning (very casual.)

I had been eying these beautiful fabrics from the Wooden Wagon and ordered them.

I then decided to do “insides and outsides” as our first and the life cycles for spring (garden!) I drew a little drawing:

And stuck it on the fridge. We had our winter theme. I then told Lou about our plan and we went to one of her favorite drawers where our special rocks are. We brought out the big one. It has a great inside/outside.

We ironed the cloths and Lou helped me crumple them up on top of a bookshelf (we had to have it high enough so Ero wouldn’t rip it apart.)

Now we will place other things there that make for good inside and outside learning. Like nuts. Or does anyone know how to dry a pomegranate?
