Smelling Spices

herbcups

The little jars of spices entice my children whenever I have theĀ cabinetĀ open. When Lou was little I would take each one down for her to smell (not the spicey stuff…) and she loved that. Now that she’s 3 she wants to sprinkle a bit into a cup and pretend to cook.

I was helping Ero have some waterplay at the sink and didn’t notice it getting out of hand…

Expensive!

I opted not to take a photo of the counter. It would make any chef weep.

We played with whole spices this weekend. The girls smashed them with wooden blocks and we made little potpourri packets. It smelled amazing!

Wow, what a great idea. What kind of spices? Lavender and such?

We had the following whole spices in my cabinet: cinnamon sticks, star anise, cloves, allspice berries, cardamon pods.
I’m thinking of crushing up more and keeping some little sachets in my car – yum!
I don’t use a lot of these very often, so even though some of these are expensive, they lose their potency over time, so why not use them, right?

Totally, and I love those scents.

  • Mmmm, get some nuts, melt some butter, whisk some honey into it, then add spices to taste. Yummers! Might be fun for the kids, though finding the right time where the butter is warm enough to run liquid but not too hot to handle could be tricky.
